When it comes time to have a website built, it’s important to know what a web designer might need from you in order to build your website. Here at Nillo Creative LLC, we have an approach that we have found to be ideal. That is, we have a series of questions that we send to prospective clients to fill out to the best of their ability. It’s important to note that if for whatever reason a prospective client doesn’t become an active client, filling out the questionnaire is still beneficial as it can be used when prospecting other web designers. This to say, it is in no way a waste of time. In fact, it might actually give you an even deeper clarity as to the design you are seeking. Maybe an ‘a-ha’ moment or two.

Here are some of the questions we will likely ask you at the onset of our correspondence:

Who is your target audience?

Do you want your website to be optimized for SEO (search engine optimization)?

What is the underlying goal of your website?

What do you like and dislike about your existing website?

What are the URLs of 2-5 reference websites that you like? What do you like about these websites?

Are you interested in having a new logo created at an extra charge?

What is your budget?

What is your ideal launch date for the website?

That ‘budget’ question sometimes throws people. We have a base starting price for web design work that is pretty resolute and we like to be able to gauge if we will be able to work with you given your monetary restrictions or lack thereof.

Knowing your target audience is helpful for a few reasons, not the least of which is conducting competitor research. This is probably one of the easiest questions to answer (spoiler: they’re all pretty easy) and your answer will help your web designer garner a deeper foundational awareness as to the kinds of people you wish to appeal to.

Employing SEO (search engine optimization) is crucial if you wish to acquire some organic traffic via search engines. Please keep in mind there are some swindlers out there who will over-promise in a huge way and leave you without much in the way of results. We offer basic SEO with all of our web design packages to ensure you are generating some traffic. But please keep in mind (something a lot of clients don’t realize): it often takes months before you start ranking on the big search engines like Google. It’s important to have realistic expectations.

And now to the topic of… you guessed it… content. There are a lot of web designers who might not even consider working with you if you are unable to supply ample material for the content of your website. In an ideal world, you would already have ample text for every one of the pages within your website when approaching a web designer. But we know that isn’t necessarily realistic. Maybe your business doesn’t employ a copywriter or someone who excelled at all things English. This is when it’s good to pair with a company like Nillo Creative LLC — we can handle the copywriting for you, for an additional charge.

Be apprehensive if a web designer agrees to work with you without covering the bases outlined in the questions above. I can guarantee there isn’t a single web designer who can fully hit the mark without knowing the answers to these core questions. It signals a lack of interest in you and your desires, and is just largely unprofessional on the whole.
